review 1: This is the best book I've read in a long time. It is an amazing, humorous, poignant, magical and yet totally realistic depiction of a young mom struggling with 2 small children after her husband runs out on an errand one night and doesn't return. The descriptions of her thoughts on mothering, marriage, hating the perfection of those pulled-together, happily married moms at school, the utter exhaustion and simultaneous delight of keeping little kids occupied and entertained, the constant belief that you're doing it all wrong, the need to find oneself and yet be totally there for one's kids... It's all here. Even her struggle with depression is funny while totally realistic and believable. I loved this and immediately want to start reading it over a... moregain.
review 2: on page ten. love it. a lot. so far. ..... ok, there was an intrusive thought trigger for me at the end of the first third, but it won't be most people's phobia .... Also, I need to stop reading author's takes on their own works, bcs this one said that her real-life husband and kids are "better than" the ones in the book. Wahn wahn, way to judge the characters that you yourself created and that I was totally identifying with. Poop. I am still going to finish it, though, and it might still be awesome. less

This book was a disappointment. I found it hard to identify with or like the protagonist.

I enjoyed this book for what it is! Is the Mermaid real or part of Jenny's fantasy life?

Cute story line, relatable at most times. Could be condensed greatly.
