review 2: Last night I finished Hernandez’s intriguing book discussing the evolution of Mexico’s cartels and the corruption throughout the Mexican government, as well as other areas of society. Hernandez provides testimony from a variety of sources and a mountain of evidence that the Mexican officials were involved in protecting the Sinaloa cartel. This corruption was extensive and had been ongoing throughout various Presidential administrations. Even the current President - Nieto - is named as having some involvement with the cartels in his career. Nor does the corruption stop with the state, but spreads to the business world as well, where the cartel’s illicit gains are laundered - providing capital for Mexico’s elite.Hernandez also provides evidence that the U.S. was complicit in the growth of the Mexican cartels (particularly during Iran Contra) and has had knowledge of the corruption inside the Mexican state. It’s an informative read, though it doesn’t necessarily follow a chronological narrative (which can be frustrating at times). However, don’t let that deter you from reading and educating yourself on an important subject, which is not only impacting our neighbor and the U.S. but the world. less
