review 1: The True American subtly raises the questions ... what is an American and what happened to the American Dream. Is the Bengali immigrant the true American puruing the American Dream or is it the man (and later his family) who tried to kill him in a post 9/11 irrational rage? A good exploration of the American landscape in the context of murder and mercy. The strength of the book is its description of the America working class, the dream and patriotism. Ironically, the book's weakness is its treatment of the protagonist -- a cardboard cut out of naivete and saintliness.
review 2: A very interesting story, and another look into a different way of living. I feel more empathetic about people like the Stromans, although the writing of the book was a bit stilted, repe
... moretitive at times, and removed from reality- as if the author were trying to convince us that Muslims are OK. Maybe that is not a bad thing, but it felt a bit forced. In the hands of a more gifted writer, this would be a four star book. I am glad to have read it, and the empathy it teaches is worth a read. less

Beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. A sad commentary on our nation and its people.

Minus one star for the author's commentary. But an important and interesting story.

I liked this book. Long winded at times, but full of message.
