review 1: Anders Nilsen is, without a doubt, my favorite comic artist. This is quite the departure in style from his other work, but it works. This is an incredibly beautiful book both in content and in construction. I've never seen an accordion style book this large. It is exciting to see independent publishers embracing the book as an art object.The narratives paired with the sharp, minimal images are striking. I'd call this a perfect winter book. Like all of Nilsen's work, it's beauty is dark and dreary. All the old gods have been forgotten and are feeling disenfranchised from the world they once ruled. Athena has left Olympus and gets in trouble with mortal law on a bender one night. Poseidon is pissed about ocean acidification, but what really sets him off is a coastal theme pa... morerk. Old and New Testament characters make appearances as lotharios, addled dads and manic depressives.This is an art book that asks to be returned to.
review 2: A very quick read (took all of 30 minutes, maybe 45) but the art is beautiful and the stories fun and thought provoking.What would Poseidon do faced with our current total disregard for the world's oceans?What would Prometheus think of what his gift has wrought?What if Isaac was old enough to engage with Abraham on the mountain, what would he have thought of the whole thing?These and a few more questions are tackled in the pages (well, page since the book is one long accordion reminiscent of the scrolls on which these stories are based) of this book.As a side note, I really want to find a way to showcase the entirety of this accordion of pictures at once. But the length of wall necessary to do so is rather out of my price range. less
