review 1: Solid writing but overall uninspired, I thought. The final, eponymous, story was arguably the best. But a couple sleep/wake cycles hence, I imagine it, too, will fade from memory. This was my first foray, in a very long time, into the short story realm. Not sure I'll be foraying back any time soon. And these stories were about science no less (a personal crowd pleaser if ever a running theme were). Perhaps it's that the tone, not to mention the dialogue, the mis-en-scene, and all those other things I was taught to note diligently in my high school English classes, were so unvarying from tale to tale. It all bled together like the colors on my tie-dyed t-shirt (a staple of my HS-English-class-going wardrobe). In all, not a bad read, just a drab one. On to the ne... morext...
review 2: I really enjoyed reading the stories in this book, right up until the last one. The way this author used the characters to demonstrate the evolution of scientific thought in different time periods was wonderful. In describing females in science, she captured the essence of the struggle of women to be taken seriously in a male-dominated field at that time. Overall, I was very pleased. Unfortunately, I did not care for the final story. Maybe I missed the point, or the symbolism, or something, but I simply did not understand how it tied in at all. It was the least compelling narrative, by far, and that made the fact that it ended there even more upsetting. I considered giving it 3 stars for that reason, but that would be doing a disservice to the rest of the book. less
