review 1: I was very much aware of awkward writing while reading this, including disjointed sentences and abruptly disappointing last sentences. But I did find the subject matter interesting, especially in the stories "The Island" and "The Particles." These dealt with science during a historically significant time period which spanned from the growing acceptance of Darwin's then-controversial theory up to research into the mechanism and nature of genes and inheritance.
review 2: I have read and loved Andrea Barrett's fiction before. It's not light reading. She demands a lot from a reader, but reading this collection of somewhat linked stories, I remember the rewards of reading Barrett. It's a perfect book to start the summer since I have the mental energy to focus. Her
... more stories often present protagonists who are scientists, inventors, or explorers. In this case World War I and II also figure in the unfolding of two stories. I think my favorite is "The Ether of Space." I'd quote a passage from this story, but I want to recommend the book, and I think the pleasure is in part the way the characters are revealed. That would be spoiled if I shared. The book leaves me in awe about the world on both a cellular and a celestial level. It makes me want to know more, and it dazzles me with the way the author postulates that human longing and love shapes the way in which science is explored and then shared. Save the book for a time when you have energy to spend savoring the stories and the language. It isn't a quick read. But I will read this book again. In fact, I'm going to make a new shelf for myself--"reread." This will be my first book on that shelf. I know there are more, but I hadn't thought of doing that until now. less

It was an intelligent read and I enjoyed it, however, it is not for everyone to pick up and read.

Slow paced boring. I read the first story and put the book down. National Book Award? Meh.
