review 1: The idea of this book is great. Find and try to document the obscure place where things in history took place they may be forgotten or lost. I was totally on board with the idea, it sounded like a trip I would take. Unfortunately I found the writing a little confusing and self involved. I felt that the author inserted himself and his modern day circumstances into the mix too often. I was more interested in the places and stories, but found myself sidetracked by the narration of how things were hard to find, hard to get to, or the dialog the author had with the people that he met along the way. The individual stories are interesting, but it's hard to get past the rest to find them. I ended up skimming through about half of it.
review 2: This could and should hav
... moree been much better. I most certainly learned some fascinating and obscure history. But. The author who narrates his journey across America is constantly inserting himself into the story. I see how it happened, but what I want is a history, not a anecdotes about people with unlikely names and what kind of gorp is best. Also infuriating were entries about taking pictures at every site and not including any of them in the book. I'm fine with no pictures, but why tell me about them if you're not going to show them to me? less

Read for research. Intriguing factoids about events in the US you rarely hear about.
