review 1: Currently living in Paris and occasionally walking through the Place des Innocents, I was intrigued when I first heard about this book. From the very first page, I knew I was in for an intensely engaging story. What is most remarkable about this novel, for me, is Miller's masterful use of language to evoke a mood: "He does not light a candle—he sits on the bed in the cool almost-dark as though wrapped in the purple heart of a flower." Poetry! If you're interested in the history of France just before the deluge, read this. You will be transported.
review 2: The premise of the novel -- the clearing of the cemetary of the Innocents in Paris in the years leading up to the Revolution -- makes for an interesting depiction of the Paris of the late eighteenth century
... more. Advanced ideas of the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution confront the older ways of life in which religion and superstition have held sway. Told from the view point of the engineer, Jean-Baptiste Baratte, commissioned to undertake the clearance, the novel allows us to encounter an interesting cast of characters. less
