review 1: Quite fascinated by this era of French revolution Paris - although this story takes place some years before - but the brooding tension and the rift between the aristocracy, Versailles and the working people of the St Denis area is very well portrayed. I felt a slight feeling of anti-climax at the end - not sure if that is justified. Perhaps knowing historically what followed, maybe I was disappointed that the story ended before the inevitable terror, But the tale is well told and the idea that events related to in the book did actually take place though clearly they only provide the basis for a work of fiction, was a something that made the tale more gripping.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this book, if such a word is suitable bearing in mind the subject matte
... morer. The clearance of a Paris cemetery just before the Revolution, with the spirit of change in the dusty air of the old church and the fetid smells of the graveyard and charnel houses are wonderfully realised. Other threads of the story are a little sketchy - the love interest, the violence against and by women and the revolutionary undercurrents are all underdeveloped, otherwise I would give this 5 stars. less
