review 1: I read it. Sort of a weird combo of Maisie Dobbs meets Lord Peter Wimsey. Not the worst of this kind of thing I've read (I read a lot), but very far from the best. The plot twists were pretty contorted --- the moment where the heroine comes home to pick up some more clothes and, um, runs into her husband, is particularly unbelievable. As in no way, Jose. I found myself longing for six years later, when Luftwaffe bombers probably blew Bleeding Heart Square to smithereens.
review 2: FWFTB: run-away-wife, unemployed, journalist, London, 1934. Although I have shelved this as crime-historical, it really is a bit of a mixture with a sweet little romance thrown into boot. The perp was so evident through the whole of the book that I knew that this was a plot device. An
... mored I was right! But, so well done that I didn't get bored or tempted to read the end of the book. The writing is stylish and evocative with realistic dialogue. The characters were well-drawn - even those with the briefest of appearances. The time period between the wars is not well known to me but the interlacing of the various political standpoints with the history of the Great War was thought provoking and enlightening. Definitely recommended to those of the normal crew. less
