review 1: Powerful suspense and danger permeate this tale of British-held Manhattan in 1778, as Edward Savill, a London clerk, sails to America to attend to legal claims of displaced loyalists, and is handed a surfeit of intrigues --espionage, passion, and murder-- for his trouble. Scenes of primitive 18th century New York are vividly imagined as he shakes off his bureaucratic complacency, necessarily becoming a man of action. A ‘business’ trip to the country with his host turns deadly as their party is drastically reduced by violence, and no one he meets should be trusted. Back in the city, further malevolence and uncovered secrets bring the story to a head of steam, and only readers with great willpower will be interrupted during the last 30 pages.
review 2: A
... more nicely paced mystery set in New York City in 1776. The forces for independence had left the city which then became a bastion for the British forces. Those who maintained loyalty to Britain filled the city...a refugee crisis. Many of them were seeking redress from the crown for losses suffered in the war. Savill, the protagonist is a lower level clerk in the American Department of the British government sent to America to help these refugees with the paper work when he becomes embroiled in a murder case. Character development is nuanced and believable. less
