review 1: I have to admit that I was afraid to reach for this book. I really like Witcher saga and I had no idea what to expect. But you know how it is - you love some character and you simply can't resist when a new story shows up. The beginning is good, now great but good. Then for the next 50 or so pages I felt like this book might disappoint me after all. And that's when the real action starts. Mix of politics, witcher fighting and a little bit of mystery. All in all a very enjoyable read and I'm glad this book showed up.
review 2: My approach was slightly sentimental; how couldn't it be, the witcher saga was my first serious encounter with fantasy genre. But sentiment was not enough to help this book. Sapkowski's wit isn't as sharp (although I greatly appreciated th... moree occasional liberal social commentary), and the book suffers from overabundance of fart jokes and apparent lack of editing. The plot is questionable - sure, there are certain sub-plots, but there is no sense of closure. The ties between tropes are weak, no character of concept is fully explored, and the whole thing seems to be a debut collection of short stories. I can't remember any other book equally disappointing and entertaining at the same time. less
