review 1: There were some really good parts, and some others that were a bit strange or mature. For example, when Mr. Big Nose's nose exploded, I can't decide if it's funny or horrible. When Terry marries the Mermaid who is actually a Sea Monster? Well, I did enjoy the adventures of receiving sea monkeys in the mail! Quintessential childhood dream gone wrong! I think that boys of a certain age will get into it. Redeeming elements that will draw readers in include the treehouse set-up and all of its included gadgets and gizmos [marshmallow shooter is my favorite], the funny way that Andy and Terry have of procrastinating their book deadline, and the fact that the reader can, by the end, guess that their new novel will be about the adventures had while procrastinating on said novel. O... moreverall, it's a quick and fun read that introduces younger independent readers to the format and literary devices of a novel. I would especially recommend this book to someone who likes to write or draw. Ages 9 - 11, I think, would enjoy it most.
review 2: from Luke:This book, written by Andy Griffiths and illustrated by Terry Denton, is a great introduction for kids into the world of chapter books. Though it looks rather large at 239 pages, they are full of illustrations, and there is never a page filled solely with words. If your 7-12 year old is interested in fantastic stories of kids living on their own in a world filled with lemonade fountains, ‘catnaries’, automatic marshmallow cannons and sea monsters, this is the book for them! less
