review 1: I was really looking forward to reading this, as Andy Griffiths' books have been generating a buzz in the kids' book world. I actually really liked the premise - author Andy and illustrator pal Terry have a book deadline, but they are completely stumped as to what to do for their next project. They also live in a giant treehouse, and as the deadline looms, we witness their zany life in the treehouse with an assortment of crazy characters. You can tell it's meant to be Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Captain Underpants-esque. Except it's not nearly as funny, and there's no meaningful plot beyond the "we have to write a book but we have so many wacky, unbelievable distractions." I didn't enjoy this, but I'll give it to my 4th grade son to test drive.
review 2: What
... morecould be cooler than living in a tree house? Why living in a thirteen storey tree house, of course! That’s where Andy and Terry live, the two zany characters of The 13- Storey Treehouse. This treehouse comes complete with a bowling alley, see through swimming pool, a lemonade fountain, a secret underground laboratory, a tank full of man eating sharks, a marshmallow machine that follows you around and shoots marshmallows into your mouth, and every other fun thing the authors could conceive of. Andy and Terry are writers, just like the authors of this semi-autobiographic book (who are also named Terry and Andy). They are supposed to be working on their new book for Mr. Big Nose, their publisher, but kooky things keep getting in their way – cats that can fly, sea monkey eggs that hatch into a mermaid who is really a monster, and the arrival of a giant gorilla. Dealing with these oddities has made for an exhausting day, but in a moment of sheer genius, they decide that all of the above would translate beautifully into a book, and voila! The 13_ Story Treehouse is born. This book is chock full of illustrations but light on text. Every page has at least one or more black and white drawing, and some pages are pure illustration with no text at all. Obviously, there is not much of a plot here, but the fantastic detailed sketches, irreverent text, and overall silliness make for a quick and humorous read.Something trivial I learned from reading this book - in the UK and Australia storey means level of a building. In the US it's spelled story.Boys will love it, especially fans of Captain Underpants. For concerned parents, the humor in The 13-Story Treehouse doesn’t get much worse than shoveling monkey poo and burping. What could be cooler than living in a 13 - storey tree house? Why living in a 26-Storey tree house, of course! A sequel, The 26- Story Treehouse is being published soon. less
