review 1: Awful, I was able to finish it because of the near constant mindless action. The characters were pretty terrible. Two are serial killers but the reader is expected to like them and not have any problem with it. This is kind of like if Joe Abercrombie were written by a 13 year old goth girl who thinks it's cool to drink her own blood. The ending is a total deus ex machina with no foreshadowing or indication it's coming at all
review 2: Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, the characters aren't the most likeable bunch (the protagonists include a serial killer, a kidnapper who gets off on torturing his young victims & a pimp, though the pimp is one of the relatively nice ones who protects his girls you hear so much about). This initial lack of likea
... morebility is explained by the end, though it does undermine empathy for the first third or so. To offset this the villains are depicted as being suitably hateful. The prose & dialogue are a little rough at times & the pacing is off. There's also an annoying layout error (it might be intentional) where shifts in character aren't marked with a paragraph break. Those flaws aside, it's still an enjoyable read, there's a nice smattering of gore & the action (which is frequent but not overly so) has a nice underlying sense of peril. It's definitely not a fantasy world for the whole family (unless it's the Manson family), Andy Remic's take on hell sounds especially unpleasant (He should look into writing for those evangelical hellhouses that operate in the states). Despite it's flaws I did feel drawn in by the story & was curious to see how it all pans out & the climax did play out in a way I didn't expect. Definitely not for the squeamish but more than worth a read for someone looking for a bastard child of Joe Abercrombie, David Gemmell & Takeshi Miike. less

A fast read, ultra violent, and a fun adult read. A good dark fantasy.
Ren93
Hard hitting sword and sorcery novel. Reminiscent of Gemmells work!

sure is grim, and not all that well written.
