review 1: Amazing and enjoyable book that contains some very heavy social topics but is not a morality tale. First, I'd like to say that I stayed up late to finish this. Could not put it down. The story was riveting; the characters and plot engrossing. The execution of the sum, excellent.I loved this book not only for the story telling itself, but for incorporating some topics of which many Americans are either completely unaware or in denial. Like the way that poverty and its associated violence effects our youth, sex slavery, and kids the system fails or exploits of whom there are so many. I spent 5 years doing IT at a community mental health provider and had to read some of our case workers' clients' charts from time to time for my work. I certainly saw documentation of situation... mores that when strung together could have led to this story being reality.I love this book for portraying most of those who serve our country's underprivileged youth as the hard working heroes they are. And for portraying how the same kids also can be horribly taken advantage of by the system responsible for protecting them. This story is incredibly nuanced. It wasn't bleeding heart sappy or callously overdramatized. For me, it hit a sweet spot that rang of truth (I know. It's still fiction.) without preaching or pushing the reader in any direction. The story unfolded in such a way that it felt like I was hearing it from a friend who just needed to tell it, not out of care for what I thought or to make a point, but because they needed to unload to process their stress.5 F'ing stars and each one well deserved. You should read this. Also, I want to give a double thumbs up for nailing the ending. So many times a book can be ruined for me by a weak ending or even no ending at all as a dramatic cliff hanger or some form of To Be Continued. The major plot lines in this story were completed and completed well. The ending was not a patsy ride into the sunset making me want to gag nor did it leave me saying, "But what about ...?!" The door is left wide open for this to become a series, but this book is capable of standing on its own as a great read. If the author does follow up with more about this character, I'll definitely buy/read it because this author tells a darn good tale. Not because I was left hanging by a cheap trick of a partial story. Loud. Slow. Clap.
review 2: Let me start off by saying Angel is a new to me author. I saw her commenting on a post on facebook and the cover sort of drew me in. I added her, then went to amazon to see what she had. I sampled four books, actually wanted to buy them all, but I am on a horrible book budget at the moment so I had to pick ONE! Yes, I know! For a book hoarder thats like evil hell! Anyways, I'm digressing. To put it blunt, I LOVED this book. I mainly loved the story as a whole. It wasn't too much, it wasn't too little it was just the right blend of intrigue possible supernatural, and violence that kept me reading until the end. I devoured this book in one sitting and GOD I WANT MORE DAVIS!!!!!!!!!!! He is like that awesomesause dangerous fellow you know must have a heart of gold under all that hotness. This book is labeled Urban Fantasy, for me it was more suspense/thriller but I see where the fantasy element comes in and I was fascinated by how the author worked it.The book read like movie. I was alway casting characters in my head and could totally see it on the big screen. I love female characters that are tough but still vulnerable. They have the ability to die or even cry when pushed to far and I need that in my heroes. Invincibility is overrated--this author however is not! I will be wish listing the rest of this authors books and slowly getting them as the budget allows! BRING ON BOOK TWO!!!!! less
