The Pantone Colour of the Year for 2018 is Ultra Violet.
“The Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” says Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute.
Purple is well-renowned as being a royal colour. When I envision purple, I definitely cast my mind back to Prince. But I also think about Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Ultra-Violet is described as “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade,” by Pantone. One that “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.” Which also makes me think of David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix.
This year I am going to kick back and imagine purple –toned pictures of stars scattered across the galaxy, and visualise the “vast and limitless night sky” and the “mysteries of the cosmos”.
In Alice Walker’s novel The Colour Purple, the colour purple is also presented as an example of God-given beauty.
Excuse me while I kiss the sky…
