review 1: The first book I read by Angel Martinez was "Gravitational Attraction" and I loved it so much I was a bit fearful to read another one as I did not want to be let down. But, I could not resist and "Vassily the Beautiful" did not let me down one bit. I will admit the first third of the book was tough - Vassily's despair and hopeless situation is so well portrayed that it hurt to read. But, the story and Angel Martinez's writing had already caught me; I read on and, while there was no magic bullet, the resolution was both wonderful and realistic given the situation. It is a fairly long book, yet not long enough! The world building is spot on - just enough to give you a real sense of it, but not so much that it takes over the stories or characters. All the characters ar... moree multi-dimensional and fascinating. I just fell in love with Vasya and Sumi. They were each strong and weak in such different, yet complementary ways. And Giorgio - wish there had been more of him in the story. Oh - yes - Angel Martinez knows how to write sex scenes. I read the first one in the book twice. The characters' emotions are beautifully described; the writing at times both poetic and sexy. I recently read on the author's GoodReads blog that several books are not available currently due to publisher issues. I sure hope that gets resolved soon! I want more!
review 2: I usually don't like weak, effeminate-looking characters. The title and the cover turned me off of this one for a while. But I finally got around to reading it, and was very pleasantly surprised. I loved the development Vassily goes through-I have a soft spot for books that flesh out characters extremely well, and this book does that. I was impressed with the issues Vassily faced-neurological damage, drug addiction (more characters need to confront this) while he all the while remained determined and strong. Very well done characterization. The only really negative thing I can say is that I wanted to know even more about the characters and see more of them, which makes this a five star. less
