New releases: February 2017 – children's books - Owlish Books

As habitual readers of my blog will know, on the fourth Wednesday I always choose a different genre’s top 5 of new releases. This week I went for children’s books, for one reason and one reason alone: the covers! I know, I know. You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but I feel like it is allowed for children’s books. Especially if there are pictures in it, then the cover gives a good impression of the quality and style of the drawings (and therefore most likely the story as well).

  • The Princess and the Page by Christina Farley

A dark secret lurks in Keira’s family. She comes from a long line of Word Weavers who bring their stories to life when they use a magical pen. Oblivious to the family’s secret ability, and angry at her mom’s rule of no fictional writing, Keira discovers her grandma’s Word Weaver pen and uses it to write a story for the Girls’ World fairy tale contest, believing it will bring her good luck. But when Keira decides to have her fairy tale reflect her family’s imperfect life, and has the princess in her story vanquished to a dark tower for eternity, she starts to wonder if anyone ever truly lives happily ever after.

  • The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart by Stephanie Burgis
    Publication date: February 27th 2017
Aventurine is the fiercest, bravest dragon there is. And she’s ready to prove it to her family by leaving the safety of their mountain cave and capturing the most dangerous prey of all: a human. But when the human she finds tricks her into drinking enchanted hot chocolate, Aventurine is transformed into a puny human girl with tiny blunt teeth, no fire, and not one single claw. But she’s still the fiercest creature in the mountains — and now she’s found her true passion: chocolate! All she has to do is get herself an apprenticeship (whatever that is) in a chocolate house (which sounds delicious), and she’ll be conquering new territory in no time…won’t she?
  • No, even though the fifth book  is about chocolate, that’s not the one that ended up on my to-read list. I’ve actually gone for two books this time: the first and the third. Obviously the first one since it is about a magic pen. Enough said! And I’m intrigued by the third one because it has two word plays in the blurb alone. If the entire book is filled with them, I’ll be delighted. But if there aren’t any, then I’ll be disappointed because the story itself doesn’t really speak to me. Though it should be interesting how they take this subject that has been done in every single way multiple times and try to turn it into something new for children. How about you guys?

    Happy reading,

    Loes M.
