review 1: A really excellent reference guide of people's expressions, with entries to cover a large range of emotions. The straightforward explanations of verbal and nonverbal expressions are helpful and detailed. Even though such expressions cannot be said to apply equally to all cultures, societies, and genders (there are some things that women are more likely to express than men, and vice versa), the authors encourage their readers (most of whom are writers, I imagine) to think about how they want the characters in their stories to act and react, and to think of all the ways that emotion can be expressed. The book is divided in emotions and the corresponding expressions, and also includes many writing tips. While there can truly be no hard and fast rules about writing, this book ... moreprovides some very helpful and useful guidelines, especially for us aspiring writers!
review 2: I should have clued in that this was just a list of possible emotional reactions, given the title. That's my fault. However, though the book is supposed to help a writer avoid cliches, I felt like a lot of the possible descriptors for various emotional states were cliche in and of themselves. I also think that every character has reactions unique to them, so I am not sure how helpful this book can truly be. less
