Once Upon a Road Trip
review 1: **I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**This is an amazing memoir of a two month solo road trip across country by an 18 yr. old girl. I would never have been brave enough to set out on my own like that at her age, to meet people who I only knew online--and I would have had a very difficult time with either of my girls (or my son, for that matter), wanting to make that sort of trip. Fortunately, this didn't turn into a cautionary tale about online friends, and all was well. :)Getting to know her friends, and following her many adventures, is a great read. You feel like you're right there, taking the trip along with her. There's humor, anxiety, fear, loneliness, joy---and yes, even love.I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for... more something a little different in terms of a coming of age tale.
review 2: I found out about this book while browsing through my Goodreads recommendations. The title and cover both seemed a bit too cheesy, but the blurb (road trip!!) interested me enough to buy it online. It took me about 2 days on/off to read OUaRT. With that said, I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did! Reasons: 1. Angeli's personality is very relatable. When I read books, I have this habit of skipping through entire paragraphs and even pages just to find out what happens next in a story, then go back to read the details. While reading OUaRT, instead of doing this, I found myself pausing to think about how Angeli so much like me (relationship with Elsie, sisters, not fitting in, "7th Heaven family," etc.)2. It's hard to write the truth sometimes, and the author does it amazingly. I had to keep reminding myself that Angeli IS a real girl. There are so many characters, but just enough is written to display each of their personalities without rushing it. (Scott...WTF & Vince got an entire 1/3 of the book, but who's complaining haha..) I love that Blount includes journal entries for each leg of her trip to summarize where her head is in all of the craziness. Some readers might say that the author was being "too preachy" with all the stuff about God, but let's remember that this is a memoir. Did anyone see this? ->"Because one day, I want you to know the whole story of how I met your father." Why should she exclude a major aspect of her journey just because some people might be touchy about religion? Overall, I feel the writing was brave and admirable. 3. Blount uses quotes to separate the three parts of her journey. Made sense. My favorite was the second - “An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is an adventure wrongly considered.” – G. K. Chesterton less
