review 1: There are a lot of interesting reviews on this book - which is good, because Anita Brookner surely merits serious consideration. Whilst important conditions of loneliness and old age are explored, I kept comparing the book with Hotel du Luc which did something similar in an altogether more enticing way. I found this a boring book to read. Yes, the writing is superb, and I looked up many words I thought I knew the meaning of - but found, not quite. The sense of place and season are evocative. The characters well formed but so, so boring. I thought. They all seem to be essentially self-centered and given to much vacillation. These may well be characteristics of the issues, but don't lead to much of a story; even the only lively one, Vicky, doesn't get beyond being her peculia... morer self of 'no fixed abode', and that is not too exciting. I suppose this is essentially a serious book meant to be read seriously. Taken in that light one could probably find much to ponder.
review 2: I'd never read any of Anita Brookner's novels before, saw this one at the library, and decided to give Strangers a try. It's a well written novel which deals with aging, isolation, loneliness, and depression. Given that, it would take a truly masterful writer to come up with something that wasn't depressing to read. Unfortunately, Anita Brookner isn't that writer. I'm glad I read this book, since it gave me a taste of Ms. Brookner's writing skills, but I have no desire to ever revisit it again. less

Strangers has the same quiet sadness that I've enjoyed in Brookner's other books.
