review 1: Paul Sturgis, retired 70 year old bachelor tackles loneliness, concerns of failing health and unfulfilling relationships with two slightly younger women. Tricky topic! It takes a brave writer to bring Paul Sturgis's life to us and a committed reader to try to understand it. No epiphany, no momentous events, just vacillation and drear. ... morehe book. One follows a man of 72-73 through his daily, lonely routines, including obligatory visits with a female cousin and encounters with two very different women. The women are not particularly interested in him, but they stimulate another way of regarding his life and realizing choices he hadn't considered, which make all the difference. Effects are subtle and his responses ambivalent and altogether real and instructive. less

An affirming autumnal book. One of Anita Brookner's most upbeat works. Exquisite writing.

A bit too melancholy for this time of year...

A bit haunting, but complex and intriguing.
