review 1: Anita Nair is among the leading Indian writers in English and this is her first foray into crime fiction. By and large it works, after a very slow and almost wooden start. Her protagonist is a great cop beaten by the system, middle-aged and likes a whiskey - classic cop. The story shows a clash of old and new India, and is centred on hijrahs (transgenders et al) and traverses to payoff culture that permeates India, in this case the boom city of Bangalore.The plot is actually quite good, and the storyline good enough. There are some wonderful patches of writing, and some of the characters (especially the cop) are evocative.It tells the story of the new city and its pressures best, with the crime almost receding to the background although still quite well ... moredone.
review 2: I was highly impressed by Anita Nair's previous work, Ladies Coupe and so, I decided to give this book a shot. A serial killer with a peculiar modus operandi goes on a murdering spree across Bangalore and the protagonist, Inspector Gowda decides to hunt the killer down. The whole story unfolds at a good pace but some characters are not given enough space and justification. The plot is quick and intriguing but becomes dull in several places. Inspector Gowda isn't your regular super cop, which works in favour of the plot and keeps you involved. I also felt that there were a few loose knots which ought to be taken care off in the sequel (assuming the author pens one).I have generously given it 3 stars but there's definitely room for improvement. One can finish this book in one go. less
