review 1: Dogs Don't Do Ballet tells the story of a young girl who believes in the talents of her own dog (Biff) when no one else does. Biff is no ordinary dog, he has big dreams to make it on the big stage as a ballerina. The little girl in the story who has no name persuades her dad to let her take Biff to the Royal Ballet but he tells her “No, Dogs don't do ballet”? The main message behind the story is to reinforce the idea that anyone can do anything they want and not be afraid to break the mould. It inspires children to pursue their dreams and challenges common stereotypes of girls only pursuing ballet. In year 2 we are currently using this as a core text to develop children’s speaking and writing during Literacy sessions. It is beautifully written and contains French bal... morelet terms which they children found amusing. The children have throughly enjoyed the story and it was nice to see both girls and boys equally engaged with the text. During their educational visit the children had the opportunity to visit the Barbican to watch the London symphony orchestra perform ‘Dogs Don't Do Ballet’. The cross curricular links the book provides opportunity for is encouraging and promotes reading for pleasure beyond the classroom.
review 2: The book “Dogs don’t do Ballet” is a wonderful book about a young girl who believes in her dog, Biff even when everybody else does not. The Little girl attends ballet classes knowing her dog would also love to attend but cannot because her dad says no that “dogs don’t do ballet”. Everytime when the girl attends her classes she senses being followed. The little girl attends a Royal Ballet, and on the way there she has that sense again of being followed. While at the ballet, things on stage go wrong for the act and finally Biff appears and starts performing with the orchestra. Proving that dogs can do ballet.Anna Kemp has used a great concept to open up the topic of stereotyping to the young reader. This book can be used in class discussion. It shows the little girl being a good friend and believing in her dog, and it can also encourage the young reader to consider never to discourage or stereotype others. This book can be used with examples such as girls dance and boys play games. Its shows that if given the opportunity, girls can play games and boys can dance. The images are very captivating.I recommend this book for reading time in key stage 1, age 5-7.This book can be used in class reading and for class discussion. less
