review 1: "I Love To Dance" by Anna Walker is a simple and straightforward children's book starring a rambunctious zebra named Ollie and his fun-loving side-kick Fred the dog. The thing I liked most about this story was the way Ollie and Fred improvised with various props in pursuit of one of their favorite activities-dancing. Walker's illustrations, in "ink on watercolor paper" are also delightful because they are a graceful accompaniment to the bold black text, making the book a visual treat as well.
review 2: As a book overall, I'd say the book was all right. Not a fabulous or original must-read. 3 stars. But as a storytime possibility--excellent! A great wiggle book to get kids to participate in--though you might want to be cautious about the kids acting out flips! P
... moreerhaps use your hands or skip the part all together. If the crowd is a bit too young (or too hard to keep under control), you could always have a stuffed animal to demonstrate the different actions. Should be a fun one to read-aloud to both toddler and preschool, and as a lap-read. With the ending, a PJ storytime could work, too!2/8/12 Ha ha--I should read my reviews of books before I do storytimes and save myself some thinking! I decided to use this in my Movement-themed storytime. And as I re-read it, I just couldn't think of how to do it. Then I had a brilliant idea--use a stuffed animal. Apparently I thought that before. Oh well. At least the brilliancy still comes more than once. We had a large stuffed rabbit, so I used him to "help Ollie tell the story." The first group it went all right. I don't think I thought it out well enough. I asked the kids what the rabbit should do to enact the actions. That was probably too much. In the second group (half the size of the first), I was the one who asked the rabbit if it could flip and roll and such. The kids really enjoyed that. Perhaps it was because an adult was talking to a toy. Ah, what little they know of me. :-)11/18/13: This is a great one to use in our Movement/dancing storytime, because it is always applicable, and I can more easily act it out since I've already been jumping and dancing and am in comfy clothes. The kids liked it. Some joined me in the movement. I think I surprised some adults as well as myself that I did some of the tumbling part! less
