The Others
review 1: I plunged into dark fantasy at the age of fourteen (I know, bad choice) with Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series. The Others is more than a deserving successor to that series; a fascinating look at an America where the Others--the terra indigene--do not hide in the shadows, as so many urban fantasies would have us believe, but own the world, and tolerate humans only by the skin of their teeth. Wolves, Crows, Grizzlies, Coyotes, Elementals, Reapers--all of them are here, and real, and hungry. And the concept of the cassandra sangue--of women who speak prophecies through the spilling of their blood--is fascinating. The dynamic of choice vs. slavery, too, is deft and haunting. Utterly gorgeous.
review 2: This review is for the audiobook. A continuation of the story
... more from Written in Red. This episode was paced better. As other reviews have mentioned, Bishop does a good job of world building. I was a little confused about the story arc involving an island and a tourist town? Not sure how they were supposed to relate to each other, but they appeared so suddenly in the narrative that it felt contrived - disposable red shirts headed to slaughter so that the existing people and places didn't have to be sacrificed when the story needed danger and drama. Despite this, the story unfolded well, and the ending was satisfying. less

I love her world building! Amongst, you know, loving everything else about the book. Of course.
