review 1: This novel spans two eras....the modern one and also the year 1340 in Siena (Italy). The trick of the novel is to depict Romeo and Juliet in 1340 with a similar story in modern times. It was apparently a first novel for Ms. Fortier. Overall she did a good job. I did feel it was weak on character development however. Julie is the main character who at 25 is concerned with social issues but has NO skill at personal relationships. This lack of social ability produces some problems she has to overcome. The book does and then again does not showcase this change in her.
review 2: Mediaeval is all I'm saying. Initial thoughts:1) I would like to give 4 stars out of 5 but there were too many things that bothered me so I ended giving 3 stars instead.2) Ther
... moree are two story lines: The first one plays in the present in Siena, Italy, where Juliet Jacobs tries to find a treasure hidden by her long-death mother. The second is set in Siena in 1340 and deals with Giulietta Tolomei and Romeo Marescotti who, of course, fall in love but are brutally separated. 3) To be honest I liked the historical parts a lot more. The chemistry between the Giulietta and Romeo was more sensible and their characters weren't as dull as the characters from the present story line. The author did a great job integrating politics and money and shifted the story nicely e.g to the dramatic palio.4) The story in the present Siena was alright. It definitely becomes more intense once Juliet arrives at Eva Maria's party (around page 400) and I couldn't stop reading when I reached this point of the story. But somehow... I would have liked to love the characters more but -->5) --> they were not as lovely described as Giulietta and Romeo in 1340. On the one hand Juliet tries to forget about names and prejudices but on the other hand it felt like she fell more in love with the name Romeo instead of the Person. 6) The drama between her sister and herself was... weird. I don't know. At the beginning they literally hated each other and in the end they hugged each other desperately because they realised how much they love each other?! 7) There is one thing I really hated: the use of the word mediaeval. It is (was) one of my favourite words but the author used it for pretty much everything. A mediaeval house. Those stairs look mediaeval. Her hair-do: mediaeval. Everything in Siena, from top to bottom, is mediaeval. 8) All in all I liked this book. It could have been better, but it was a nice read. I would recommend it if you like the story of Juliet and Romeo in general and are a fan of mediaeval Italy. less
