review 1: I'm looking forward to reading Anne Hillerman's next novel continuing her father's Navajo mysteries.I do believe she still has some room for polishing her fiction writing, but I realize it may take some time to switch from non-fiction to fiction. Her background of writing non-fiction and helping Tony with a book about the Southwest definitely show in this novel. Although some folks may enjoy a travelogue feel, I would like a little less of that and more work on the mystery and characterization, continuing the information about Navajo culture past and present. This doesn't mean I won't recommend her book; I would surely tell all Tony Hillerman fans to read it. It's my own personal preferences. As much as I have loved James Michener's writings, I had to stop after over 100 pa... moreges of Alaska because he was just starting to get to people, not geology/geography; I simply had lost interest, even though I love novels set in Alaska. I'll try again someday...So, keep it up, Anne, I'm reading to read another of your Southwest novels...
review 2: Anne Hillerman follows in her father's footsteps, picking up the story of Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee of the Navaho Police. In this story, her focus is on married couple Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito and how they go about solving the attempted murder of the now retired Leaphorn. Frantic to not let their friend and mentor down, Bernie, in particular, struggles to find clues even though she is officially on leave.Hillerman has written a good solid mystery with plenty of twists and turns and its a very enjoyable read but she doesn't have the knack, the same passion for the Native American way of life and their country as her father. While reading, I am reminded that the area, the people don't quite come alive for me in the same way as they did for her father. Good writer, good story but different from Tony Hillerman. While I love the characters, I'm not sure I want to read about them from another author's perspective. Its a bit like Sherlock Holmes — I'm leery to read another story of his from another author. It feels different and its like losing something in translation. I think I would have enjoyed this more, and given more credit to Ms. Hillerman if she had written this story with her own characters. Then I wouldn't have compared her writing with her father's. less
