review 1: Lyle's alternative Elizabethan world is beautifully constructed. 'The Alchemist of Souls' is a tale of intrigue centred around a Court and theatres drawn skillfully enough to feel authentically period yet lightly enough to enable the skraylings, Lyle's fascinating other-worldly creatures, to blend seamlessly in this meld of fantasy and history. The characters are well drawn, the pace is smooth and swift and the plot intriguing and revealed by perfectly placed degrees. Absorbing stuff!
review 2: Wow, Elizabethan England sure is dirty. I meant that in a literal way, in case anyone takes offense. Anyway, I was expecting more of the fantastical stuff, so it was a bit of a let-down when there was less than what I expected. What I did like, though, is that I got to k
... morenow more about the characters Mal and Coby through their chapters while they're doing stuff. Unlike a lot of books I've read, where the authors tell stuff about their characters but I never really get a good feel of who they really are while in action. Another thing I liked is that although the story is told entirely on third person, you can distinguish Mal and Coby's points of view. Mal actually sounds like a guy. The main characters and the supporting cast (mainly Ned, actually) are sympathetic and flawed at the same time. less
