Glossary + Bonus !

Hello readers!

In today’s post, I decided to share with you something that I struggle with. As a French speaker studding in English, one of the difficulties I encounter the most is vocabulary that I do not understand, especially when reading books from the 19th and 20th centuries, the hardest being anything using Shakespearian orthography. Even if the Razor’s Edge is not the hardest book to read, there a

re a few words with their definition that were a challenge for me while reading The Razor’s Edge.

1- “[ …] from her unfortunate entanglement.”: A complicated trap.

2- “[ …]  this intelligence was being somewhat smugly imparted […]”.:  Having excess pride in oneself

3- “[…]  a pear, golden and luscious, […]”: Something very appealing.

4- “[…] the clever dressmaker had cut her frock […]”: A woman’s or girl’s dress.

5- “[…] I fetched her and we drove down.”: To go for and bring back.

6- “With a tankard of pale ale […]”: A large cup of beer.

7- “The flames made the dingy room more companionable.”: Dark and dirty.

8- “[…] she had shrewdness and a quick eye for the absurd.”: A kind of intelligence.

9- “[…] With a young man who had spurned the best chance […]”: To refuse to accept something.

10- “[…] and she repeated to me his flippant reply”: Lacking proper respect.

11- “[…] he tells you is true his loading seems to involve some very strenuous work.”: requiring great energy.

12- ““Poor Larry, she giggled.”: To laugh.

13- “They’re prepared to sacrifice everything to satisfy their yearning”: Strong desire or need.

14- “I have inkling that he had a definite idea of what he wanted […]”: having a slight idea about something.

15- “She was in no mood even for the mildest jest.: A thing said to cause laughter

16- “Now it’s just a sort of ache, like the stiffness you get after a long ride […]”: Property of being hard to bend.

17- ““In a state of life in which a merciful Providence […]”: Giving relief from suffering.

18- “[…] she asked, frowning a little.: Not sure about something.

19- “[…] there was no money to send him to Sandhurst, so he had to enlist.”: To join the army.

20- “His wife, after years of dreary, sordid drudgery broke

down […]”: Causing sad feelings.

The words in bold characters are the one I struggled with while reading part two. I hope this post will help you understand the Razor’s Edge. Please note that all definitions were found by using the Word Wise function of my kindle.

Bonus: Why read on a kindle?

Since about 6 months, I am mostly reading on my kindle device. I do recommend a kindle device to everyone who enjoys reading and who’s a technology lover. Being simple, useful, small, economical and modern, here are four reasons why you should get a kindle.

1- Books are cheaper!

In most cases, you can find your favorite book at a discount price. For example, I bought myself the Razor’s Edge on Amazon for only 0.99$! This is a fraction of the regular price.  All books who are copyright free are only a few cents and if you are a discount hunter, you can surely find books that are more than 75% off.

2- A massive amount of knowledge in a tablet.

We all know that while reading, it is certain that you will acquire knowledge. It is incredible the amount of thing you can learn by simply reading a book. Knowing that now, I have more than 25 books in my kindle amazes me. I have so many things to learn from all those books and they are all at the same place. My kindle contains numerous hours of learning and knowledgable authors who share their thoughts. I could not carry with me such things without my precious kindle.

3- Word-Wise.

This tool was used in this post. It is a dictionary that will directly display the definition of words that the community looked up with asking you to do anything. Words that many people had to look up are already defined, meaning that you are sure of understanding everything. This function can be activated depending on if you need it. The best thing about it, it comes with you kindle for free!

4- Carry your books wherever you go.

You are a globetrotter who enjoys reading?  I guess the hardest thing for you is the select the only book that fits in your backpack.  This is not a problem with a kindle, you can have everything the book you want to read in a very small tablet. It won’t be an issue anymore to bring more than one book with you.

I hope you enjoyed the post!

Cheers,

Matt
