review 1: Hermes Diaktoros goes to a remote Greek island where it's most famous thing is an icon, which thought to occasionally cause miracles. It was first found on the island after guiding men from a shipwreck to shore many years ago. Hermes suspects the icon is a forgery and calls in an art friend to check it out. Then the local icon painter is found dead on his boat by poisoning. Hermes wanders around the island confronting the helpers to the priest and other locals, gradually obtaining clues.
review 2: The mysterious Hermes Diaktoros visits a church to see a famous icon, but he's not sure he likes what he sees. The island depends on the tourists the icon brings, but as he talks to the villagers, and to some visiting, hated gypsies he discovers the secrets that ... morehave been long buried. As is often the case in these books, the crimes that he elucidates are not the ones that the reader expects. There is a murder here, but while Hermes ensures that there is also punishment, it's not the worst of the crimes that he exposes. less
