review 1: Messenger of Athens is a perfectly competent mystery, but not compelling enough for me to look for more from the author. On a small Greek island, a young woman falls to her death in an apparent suicide. Of course it's not one, and a detective--named for the Greek god Hermes and referred to as "the fat man"--arrives to investigate and shake up the stagnant, somewhat foul island life. The mystery itself is competently constructed, and the hints of the of supernatural (Is the fat man really Hermes the god? Only his personal trainer knows for sure ...) are intriguing, but the whole thing never quite gelled for me. The prose was a little too self-consciously writerly, and the story just a little too precious. Others may enjoy it more, though.
review 2: Really e... morenjoyed this book. I wasn't sure at first, and there are parts where it is difficult to know who's speaking--at first. But the more I read, the more I liked the book. A stranger shows up on a Greek Island to find out why a young girl died. Along the way he runs into many different types of people and, of course, slowly discovers the truth behind the death. But, the book is written very well. In some places it's lyrical. There is fairness, goodness, and retribution to be found in the story. You aren't left hanging, wondering if someone got away with something...I'm looking forward to finding the 2nd book of the series. less
