review 1: I've started out reading these in the wrong order and while each story does stand alone, it would be better to read them in order to see the development of the detective, Hermes Diaktoros, who is an interesting character. I'm still waiting to find out what they deal is with his white shoes though! While I didn't enjoy the first book in the series (too dark), this one was a winner. During the dreary NW winters, it's important to be transported to dry, hot, bright places.
review 2: There is a definite tinge of Mr. Harley Quin in this book's "the fat man" and this study on greed for money. The author is Greek but lives in England and the book certainly has no difficulty for unilingual English readers. There are Greek phrases, but the obvious ones of greeting, so
... moreit doesn't matter if they are familiar or not since you know what the intent is. You can certainly feel the heat of a Greek summer in the writing as the dust gets up your nose, everyone becomes slow, and you really want a breeze. This is small town Greece with small town police and I liked the sergeant who was doing his best to keep his protege away from the pervasive corruption. He knows that once you start down that road it's almost impossible to come back out. Many of the characters are doing what they do for money, for prestige or, like Dino the reporter, to further their career, but there is the barber who knows how many haircuts he has to do in order to keep afloat and he only does that many and spends the rest of the time fishing. The elderly man who dies on his way to his stall with the day's watermelons is of the latter school of thought, although he is also still suffering from the loss of his wife. Everyone in town seems to know him, the old man with the watermelon stand, and they all have stories about buying slices of watermelon from him. He provided a service to the town and they all appreciate it. less

Another good mystery by Zouroudis. The character of the fat man is becoming more complex.

Another great story, a book which kept me glued until I finished it.
