review 1: Just finished listening to this audio version as we continue our journey home from our summer vacation. This very young adult story deals with a 13 year old Jewish girl sent to live in Sweden by her parents during WWII. Stephenie has aspirations to be A doctor like her father. Since Sweden has offered asylum to Jewish children, kids like Stephenie are being sent to live with strangers to continue their educations in relative safety. Stephenie and her sister are sent to a fishing village on a island off Sweden's coast. Stephenie must now leave the island to head off to grammar school on the mainland with another family who, though cold and condescending, have a son 5 years Stephenie's senior that welcomes her warmly. Sven is like a big brother to Stephenie, but she wishe... mores for more. This story is geared for girls from ages 10-14. There is quite a lot of fluff for this age group but since I have a car full of girls, I have to deal. The story is enjoyable, but I would have preferred a more equal balance of what was going around her rather than it being all about her friendship and romantic drama.
review 2: Sequel to A Faraway Island, yet it would stand just fine on its own. It continues the story of the Steiner sisters, Austrian Jews sent to Sweden for safety during World War II. This volume focuses more on Stephie, now 13, who leaves the island off the Swedish coast to attend school in the city of Goteborg. Though she lives with the doctor's family that vacationed on Sophie's island last year, Stephanie is expected to eat meals with the housekeeper, instead of the family. At school, Stephanie longs to make friends, but isn't accepted by anyone. tough questions, like, "Will Stephie never again feel completely at home anywhere? Will she always be on her way to the next destination?" (p. 4) less
