review 1: Very short list of Do's and Don'ts written during the first century. Glad I read it -- have heard it mentioned a few times lately. But the grave danger in this book is it is just another Pharisetical set of rules to aspire to. (The Pharisees had a very noble and godly beginning, but quickly clasped into external keeping of rules that they felt honored the Law.). The error here is that the purpose of the Law is to reveal sin in our lives and convince us that we have offended God. It reveals our hopeless state before Him and our desperate need of the Savior. The Law was never meant to be rules to live by.And as a believer, the law is precious to me as now I love the Lord and He has implanted His Spirit within me -- Who implanted that love and cultivates it. I now desir... moree to love and please Him because He gave me those desires. I don't need the list to know what to avoid. I want to draw near to God.
review 2: The Didache, or The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, is an early Christian treatise dated by most scholars to the late first or early second century. The text, parts of which constitute the oldest surviving written catechism, has three main sections dealing with Christian morality, rituals such as baptism and Eucharist, and church organization. It is interesting to note that from the earliest days of Christianity, abortion was clearly against the moral law. In chapter two, the Didache states:“… you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill that which is born.”The work was considered by some of the Church Fathers as part of the New Testament, but rejected as spurious by others and eventually not accepted into the New Testament canon. less
