review 1: “Once upon a time there was a very special gorilla that could use sign language” He was provided with all the basic necessities of life such as food, comforts and even some entertainment but that is not all this gorilla needed to be happy, he was very lonely and sad, so he asked his keepers for a friend. Soon after he was given a kitten named Beauty. “The gorilla loved Beauty” they immediately became the best of friends, they did everything together (even go to the bathroom!) and the gorilla took very good care of Beauty they were very happy together. Then one day the gorilla lost his temper while watching a movie that made him angry and he SMASHED the T.V. The keepers were very upset that he had broken the T.V and decided to take little Beauty away. Will they be a... moreble to stay together and live happily ever after? What immediately caught my attention about this book was its larger size and the illustration of a big gorilla with a little cat on his head smiling that along with the title, made me curious about what it was about. I found it very unique that the story mirrors the classic fairy tale Beauty and The Beast mainly because of its unlikely characters, however the story made sense and was easy to read I think partly because of the familiar story plot. Furthermore, even though the main character is gorilla it is still relate-able for children because he possess human characteristics. It also upholds the traditional moral; never judge someone based on the way they look or what you have heard others say about them in fun, modern way that will appeal to younger generations. A good example of this is when he adds humor by showing them going to the bathroom together when he states that they did “EVERYTHING” together. Another important life lesson this book teaches children is to control their anger, for it may cause you to loose someone or something you love. One of my favorite things about this book is the detailed, unique and colorful illustrations something I especially liked is the kaleidoscopic floral patterns on the walls and some of the furniture, the faces of the characters hidden among the rose petals as well as the very detailed facial expressions, both of these things make the illustrations very eye catching which keeps the reader engaged. The illustrations also reinforce the theme very well a great example of this when the gorilla becomes angry the entire page is red emphasizing his anger. This is undoubtedly a high quality picture book.
review 2: This is just a loving sweet story that is embedded in fact. A gorilla that knows sign language lets his keepers know that he is lonely. They get him a kitten, Beauty, as a companion. He takes special care of her. He watches a movie that is upsetting and destroys his tv. The keepers are worried for Beauty's safety and take her away. He convinces them that she is safe with him. I love this book. I can't wait to read it to my kindergarteners. It is about special relationships. Obviously narrative structure. This has a clear sequence. less
