review 1: Magnificent. Some of Browne's books are too dark or complex for a toddler, but this one hits the spot. The art is absolutely compelling, so detailed and the faces so expressive. More than a simple counting book (but very special just as that anyway), it's a humanist (and Darwinist) story about respect and universal love. That's how I read it anyway. Also, my two year old loves all the primate pictures. This is a really intelligent book.
review 2: Anthony Browne MAY be one of my favorite children's book illustrators. His illustrations are large format, and yet very detailed, with lots of color. Realistic, and yet friendly-seeming. This is one of the better counting books I've seen in awhile. The expressions on the faces of the apes and monkeys are very pleasant
... morewhile remaining pretty realistic (a bit smilier than in nature). Pictures are large and vivid. The numerals and type are also very large, which makes it very easy to share in a group. Finally, it's a great book for teaching. Lots of very specific and unusual species. And my favorite part, it talks about the fact that humans are primates too, and includes a self-portrait of the author as well as a great illustration of a wide ethnic range of humans. I can't wait to read it in storytime next week! less
