review 2: "My illness is only that in twenty years I have only found one intelligent man in the whole town, and he is mad."Great book. The conversations between The Doctor Andrey and Ivan are really good, at t
... moreimes you wish the whole story would consist of Andrey sharing his ideas with Ivan and Ivan shooting them down one by one in his nonchalant manner. My favorite part of the book was how Andrey goes on a two page rant about life, philosophy and indifference and just when you're agreeing with him, Ivan goes on a completely different rant and shoots all his ideas down. So you're left wondering what idea Chekhov wants to push on his reader but eventually reach the conclusion that he's left that up-to his readers to decide. So credit to him for that. Other than that Chekhov throws some great insights on who society considers to be insane. And that is best shown *Spoiler* when Andrey is thrown into Ward No 6 and is considered insane. When Ivan finds out he throws this wonderful gem. Which in my head at-least I imagine him saying with a wide ironic smirk on his face "Very glad to see you. You sucked the blood of others, and now they will suck yours. Excellent!" Overall a wonderful book and I can't wait to read his other short stories. less
