review 1: Dang, this book is awesome! It ended up heading in a different direction than I expected, and that's a good thing because I expected fluff :) Some of the characters were underdeveloped, but it's the first book in quite awhile that I stayed up reading hours after I should have gone to bed, and I loved how the setting was essential to the plot - I feel like that doesn't often happen in YA realistic fiction.
review 2: Five Flavors of Dumb is a lighthearted story of a girl stepping outside of her comfort zone and pursuing her dreams of college. The protagonist, Piper, is a senior in high school and aspiring to go to college if she can earn enough money. She lands a job as a band’s manager and is given the task to land them a paying gig. The only draw back is that
... more Piper is deaf and attempting to work in the music industry. It sounds like a very cruel premise, but is actually pulled off rather well. She forms relationships with the five members of the band and is able to complete her task despite all of the obstacles that come with being deaf. I particularly like this book because of the insight it gives into the music industry. There are a lot of behind the scenes with the band practicing and referencing famous bands they hope to emulate. I liked how authentic it felt and how much it reminded me of playing in a band. less
