review 1: I'll start with the positives. The circus world that Kahler's created is beautiful, dark, dangerous, and sexy. There were a few creative and good ideas sprinkled through the book. That's about as much praise as I can muster, however.Vivienne is not a good narrator or protagonist. She spends too much of the time indifferent to things that she knows are strange and even more time obsessed with a man that I think barely had character development beyond tall, dark, mysterious, tattoo, magic, and muscles. It was frustrating. Now, granted, she spent most of the story enchanted and with her memories wiped, but, still, even when she had moments of clarity to question things she usually chose to focus on biceps. I prefer my heroines in supernatural stories to either be scared, in-ov... moreer-their-head, and trapped in a way that seeps horror, or be aware of the world and enthralled with it because of what it is (that'd be a more honest approach these days; people who read these kind of books would love to find themselves in those kind of worlds). Vivienne just...existed most of the time and behaved erratically the rest of the time. There was potential, but I won't be continuing the series.
review 2: I picked this book up at RT14 because Alex just seemed like a great guy, so I thought I would give it a go... I am SOOOOOO glad I did! This book was so good I devoured it in one day. It's mainly a murder mystery with supernatural aspects thrown in. But it was the setting that really caught me. This book is set in a circus, complete with aerialists, jugglers, acrobats, and a freak show. The setting became a main character in the book and really helped to draw me in. The main character Vivienne is endearing, while still intriguing me and making me want to read more about her. With twists and turns galore, this book rocketed 100mph from start to finish. As soon as I finished it, I wanted more. Immediately! So I have already ordered the next 2 books in this trilogy, which I have no doubt will be as awesome as the first. If you haven't checked this out and are looking for something unique, I definitely recommend you check this series out. less
