review 1: As a closet conlanger, this book was a fascinating glimpse into the history and current landscape of constructed languages, their inventors, and the psychological and social pressures that brought them about. From the medieval nun trying to capture the language of God to the modern speakers of that pinnacle of Star Trek fandom, each language is picked apart for how it was built and why, who used it, and what made it succeed or, as was more often the case, fail. The word nerd in me feels strangely validated, haha.

The book i... mores very cleverly written, and is capable of handing off a linguist’s appreciation for the bizarre anatomy of the colorful conLangs to a reader lacking any prior knowledge in the field. The author immerses the book with striking selections from the land of conLangs, while illuminating compelling postulations on the drive behind their creation. To my knowledge, it is the only cohesive book on topic; it delves into and studies a culture that past authors seem to have been unwilling to go. In the Land of Invented Languages is an agreeable portal to a surreal domain. less
