review 1: I really wanted to like this book, because it had a cool concept and it was gifted to me by great friends... but it had a lot of flaws for me. It wasn't unreadably bad, though, there were a lot of redeeming qualities, too. I liked how it wasn't a generic love / erotic story, and I really liked some of the characters... Aidan and Stan were really well-constructed for me. The whole Aidan plotline was epic. The main problem I had was that the writing style was just too pretentious for what the book was. There were some instances when I almost skipped some passages because I knew there was no real value behind all those quasi-artistic sentences with weird syntax, made-up words and strange compositions. I mean, real value, when you know that they are crucial, but here... it was ... morejust a standard bestseller kind of book, not high literature...I also couldn't get Cait's character. She didn't feel real to me. Just a vision, an idea, a dream image. I liked how she wasn't charming to everyone, but her description... just too "magical" to be true. Also, it may be just me, but I found that for Cait's state of mind and thought process, I found that she was only 22 kind of not credible. This, for me, seems more mature, I was always depicting someone with more life experience, someone at least 24 or 25...
review 2: StyleSome excerpts: He mustered relish...Plushly laid and lushly paid...They leapt into a balloon of zin..Lacrimose onslaught.....These word riffs are rife in this work, and I would have to say very much over the top. However, paying attention to them helped me get over the tone.StoryIt was agonizingly drawn out, like Sleepless in Seattle with Ipods instead of radio, and way more neurotic and tragically morose. There were also touches of I Love Lucy except the comic situations more even more absurd and erroneous and not humorous at all.Reading this book felt like being in someone's fantasy except the fantasy was actually nightmarish obsession. less
