review 1: This book reminded me of a chapter book I read in elementary school called "The Girl With the Silver Eyes." In that book a young longer with silver eyes has powers and soon finds others like her with the same eyes and similar powers and they are no loner alone. Similar premise in this book only they all have the same birth mark. I would have loved this book in middle school, but I'm grown so I only liked it. I appreciated that the cast was multicultural -black, latino, white- and multi-class -upper, middle, bad-side of the tracks, and even "hip-hopper" (the author's phrasing, not mine!). This is the first in the series and it looks like everyone's going to get their say. What I did not like about this book is that for the first quarter, the sympathy I felt for the MC was t... morehwarted by the love interest. She was rightly wallowing in divorce-child-syndrome and the love interest, a ghost BTW, told her numerous times to just get over it. I had a problem with that because her stepdad was a douche and her mother let him talk to her any kind of way and then whisper "are you ok?" First: Hells to the naw! Second: You can't set someone up as a villain in one breath and then tell the protagonist to get over it in another.
review 2: Krystal and her mom (Janet) move to Lincoln, Connecticut - her mom's hometown - after the divorce. Janet's now remarried and Krystal resents her mom and hates her step-dad. She doesn't have many friends - well, none - and she's moody and mopey. Until she meets Ricky and he asks her for help. However, Ricky's dead - murdered - and Krystal doesn't want to accept her powers. She's drawn into a reluctant partnership with Sasha and Jake, who are two kids with the same strange birthmark and powers of their own, to figure out what happened to Ricky.I enjoyed this book very much and thought that the writing was smooth and very easy to read. There are definitely questions that were left unanswered - we'll have to wait for the next book in the series. It seemed like the author easily slid into the mind of a angry, sullen, and freaked out teenage girl. The premise as to how they came to have their powers is very intriguing and I'm interested in learning more! The mystery wraps up with a dramatic end, but the Mystyx are left with more questions...Mystyx series: Manifest (1), Mystify (2), Mutiny (3), Mayhem (4), Mesmerize (4), Majestic (5) less
