review 1: fascinating, very 'dangerous' book - its one of my reading group books and I'm freally looking forward to seeing what our muslim members think about it. I dont mean dangerous so much as controversial, but so important in the opening up of women's thinking in Afghanistan. It was written by a man, which makes me a little sceptical, but its been in my head every day since i finished it.... want to watch the film now (which was on TV recently but i was so tired i fell asleep after 10 mins, and it left 1 player the next week ...
review 2: The book has a poetic rhythm and it kept me so entranced that I read it in one sitting. The story was unexpected, and the characters were surprising and well developed, familiar and anonymous. The author is very clever in his
... moreapproach to writing and captured the spirit of the complicated main character without dramatizing her or making her someone she was not. The dualities of her being were well illustrated: naive and savvy, sinner and saint, nurturer and seductress, quiet and outspoken, scared and brave. Truly the universal experience of women --- complicated creatures we are!I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading Earth and Ashes by the same author. less

Very Powerful, I love the ending, links perfectly with the metaphor of the patience stone.
