review 1: Brothers at Bat is fascinating story of the Acerra all-brother baseball team in the 1920s and 1930s. It would be a great story to use to teach what life was like in America during that time...baseball was an important pastime, girls didn't play professional sports, the 1939 World's Fair, and the beginning of passenger airplanes. The Acerras had lots of childdren...12 boys and 4 girls...and they all got along and supported each other - through good times and bad. The story continues through WWII until their last game in 1952. My 7-yr.-old grandson was totally absorbed in this book and we researched more facts about the Acerras on the Internet.
review 2: Great true story with fab retro illustrations about longest-playing, all brother baseball team.Part funny, par
... moret sincere, interesting, and fun. Big ol' family with nothing but love between them. You're good to go with this one. Should work well as an upper grade readaloud. From the author's note:"I discovered that one brother, Freddie, lived nearby. Nervous about intruding on a stranger's life, I called to ask if I could interview him. Without hesitation, Freddie explained he had an open-door policy for dinner. He cooked for his brother Eddie, other family members, former coworkers, and any hungry friends three nights a week. He suggested I come over on Tuesday, pasta night."If that doesn't make you happy, we'll never understand each other. less
