Christmas is almost over
but the memories we make during this time
tend to haunt us or harbour us as we harbour them
my mother used to make roast chicken for Christmas lunch
she was an excellent chef
and everything she made tasted delicious
but the most delightful part of her roast was the wishbone
because if you won the tug of war on the tiny bone
you could make a wish
I don’t recall if I ever won or what the wishes were
but the idea of making a wish is a compelling one

“It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them — the character, the heart, generous qualities, progressive ideas.”
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky
