review 1: A sweet and romantic story. I've read all of Autumn Doughton's other books so far and one thing I love is that they are always the sweet happily ever after kind of stories. Maybe that's cliché or predictable but I'm always a sucker for those stories and I need them once in a while. I need them to get away from the ridiculously intense and angst-filled 'best-seller' books everyone else seems to think are great because they're so twisted and the characters are so screwed up that there is no way in hell they could actually be real people. Okay, rant over - back to this book. This story is a sweet and romantic tale about Willow, an insecure high-school senior who is blind-sided when her boyfriend of two years breaks up with her. The book follows Willow as she attempts to sort... more out her life and comes to the realisation that she changed everything about herself, her friends and what her heart really wanted for the sake of her ex-boyfriend. When long-time family friend Alex (who Willow has always had a rush on) suddenly reappears in Willow's life she finds herself letting down her walls and finally confronting her fears. Cue the sweet friends to lovers story that ends with them kissing at sunset. The ting I liked about this book was that while Willow (and all her insecurities) was frustrating at times, she behaved like I would expect a high-school senior to behave. She wasn't some epic heroine who had the wisdom and guts of someone twice her age. She was shy and insecure and afraid of getting hurt - like lots of people are when we're young. It made the story more real for me and made the love story between her and Alex even sweeter. If you're looking for a quick young-adult romance read that will leave you smiling and saying 'awwww' then this book is for you.
review 2: 3.5 STARSWhile I enjoyed this book, I have to admit I like Ms. Doughton's NA books (In This Moment, On and Edge of Glass) better. But I did find this book cute and sweet, and I loved the way Willow just seemed to *feel* everything. Whether it was sorrow or joy, she was an emotional person, and I found that endearing.I liked the way Willow didn't immediately get over her breakup with Dustin (what a douchecanoe he turned out to be), and waffled on whether she wanted him back. The way she owned up to her treatment of Laney (her former BFF) was mature and realistic.Alex perplexed me a bit. For a guy that good looking and a college sophomore, he seemed kind of insecure, and it didn't quite mesh. The "misunderstanding" between Alex and Willow was stupid and could have been solved with a 30 second conversation, but it also felt pretty realistic for teenagers! less
