Finding Audrey, by Sophie Kinsella, is about a girl named Audrey who suffers from Social Anxiety Disorder. This was quick read to start 2018! I think that this is Sophie Kinsella’s first YA novel and it was excellent. 5/5 stars because it offered humor to a serious topic.
Audrey suffers from Social Anxiety Disorder after being triggered by a poorly handled situation at school. She wears these big dark sunglasses and never leaves the house in order to feel safe. She lives in England with her parents and her brothers, Frank and Felix. One day, her brother Frank’s friend, Linus comes over to play a game called LOC and comes across Audrey hiding. After sharing what happened with Linus to her therapist, Dr. Sarah, Dr. Sarah suggests that Audrey make a documentary film. Being around Linus slowly, but surely, helps Audrey become more comfortable outside and less anxious around people.
The book tackles not only Audrey’s struggle with her disorder, but her family’s struggle as well. Her anxiety affected her family because they had to change their daily routines to help Audrey. Her family also dealt with things most families deal with everyday. For example, Audrey’s mother is worried that Frank is addicted to video games.
This was a great quick read! If you are just starting to read books about mental illness this is a great book to start. Sophie Kinsella did an amazing job writing this book because she was very realistic with her portrayal of Audrey’s family. Hopefully, most families try to adjust their lives to help any family member struggling with a mental illness. I suggest listening to the audiobook because it’s narrated by Gemma Whelan from Game of Thrones.
Happy reading Night Owls!
