review 1: Oh my God no.... I just can't. I'm done, I'll find a GOOD one to read lol! I'm not into a guy having to prove that he's both girly and manly at the same time. I don't mind a guy that cooks, sews, bakes, cleans or anything :) actually I'd like it because I suck at cooking lol! But I just can't keep reading. I'm ending it on a good note. He's proved himself to her father and he's kind of ok with it. The "friend" get's to keep publishing his secret stories, and the guy gets the girl... or the girl gets the guy.... whatever.
review 2: I thought I would hate this book, but I actually found it pretty delightful. It is the first manga book I've finished/read in the correct direction lol (thank you Allison!), so it took some getting used to. Format: Apparently the cha
... moreracters change colors in eyes and hair based on mood? I found it pretty difficult to tell them apart sometimes. For some reason we also see them shrink when they are angry/exacerbated and they look like furious dolls. It's pretty cute lol. Different bubble types seem to mean different things, the thick blurry border is a flashback, the unenclosed text is an aside, and the thin solid border is regular speech as far as I can tell. I liked how every now and then the author would stick in a sidebar of themselves writing to the readers. I'm interested to see if these traits are universal for manga or specific to this series. ps the dramatic hamster eyes in this story really made me laughStory: I picked up the book and read the back and knew instantly that I was going to find it funny. A boy secretly loves all things "feminine" like puppies, flowers, cooking, sewing. You know, all the things women are no longer actually expected to do lol. This makes him an "Otomen", a man who likes womanly things. Real men fight and act stoic and generally have no hobbies. At first I thought this was all going to be in Asuka's head, and no one could really think men cooking was wrong. Men cook in cultures all over the world. But, no, Asuka's crushe's father freaks out on Asuka and "can't eat something cooked by a man". Other characters are similarly horrified. I found it all pretty hilarious, always assuming that this story is an outrageous exaggeration of stereotypes. I did like that Asuka fell in love with a girl who can't do any of the things he loves, and is very non-traditional. I think it would have been even better if she could fight (she can) and he couldn't, but whatevs. Definitely reading more of this. less
